Lighting a Brighter Future
Did you know that lighting currently contributes to at least 20% of North American energy consumption? No wonder. Traditional incandescent light bulbs are highly inefficient, with over 90% of their energy input emitted as heat, not light, and a typical lifespan of only about 1,000 hours. While the heat generated by a fluorescent bulbs is much less than that of its incandescent counterpart (and their lifespan much higher), a significant amount of energy is lost between the conversion of ultraviolet into visible light. Enter the LED.
LEDs are extremely energy efficient and extremely long-lasting, even compared to compact fluorescents. An LED light bulb uses 80-90% energy and last up to 100,000 hours. The 2006 Millennium Technology Prize went to Professor Shuji Nakamura, inventor of the white LED, for good reason. LED lighting, like that used by Illumineer, reduces energy consumption, relamping and associated maintenance (and fuel) costs. Mass adoption of LED technology over less efficient lighting means a lighter load for the environment and a brighter future for all of us.
